If you've been prepping for the ACT in the familiar surroundings of your own room, you may be in for a surprise on the day of the test. The stress of an exam room filled with other students chattering nervously as they wait for the teacher to announce the start of the test can fray anyone's nerves. The sound of other students zinging through the test while you struggle with a particular question can throw off your timing.Just in case you find yourself with two minutes--or even one minute--left to finish a section, remember this tip.

Don't leave points on the table!

Athena Advises

There is no penalty for guessing on the ACT or the SAT.Fill in every bubble. The smartest way to do this is to pick a row. Any row! Let's say you choose "A".Quickly choose the answer "A" for any question you have not yet answered. If you are short on time, do not even read the question. Just choose "A." If you are taking the test on paper, take care to completely fill the bubble. After all, if you leave the bubbles blank, your chances of scoring the right answer are zero.Of course, it's better to have prepared for the test by training your timing. Younger students, take note! There are two aspects to training for a standardized test. First, you train for the content: you aim to answer every question correctly. The second aspect of the training is equally important. Train yourself to answer the questions at a pace that will get you comfortably through each section. You also need to train for sheer stamina, as this is a long test. And if you find yourself in a bind, just remember: "A."Good luck on the test!Dr. Marlena CorcoranFounder and CEOAuthor of Year by Year to College, on amazon.comamazon.de and many national amazon sitesBe sure to check the current grading criteria for each test in the year in which you take it.
